[EzineArticles] Are You Cyber Monday Ready?

Are You Cyber Monday Ready? EzineArticles.com Logo

Kickstart the Holidays with Cyber Monday
and Use the Momentum to Build Success!

Now is the time to take advantage of the Cyber Monday traffic surge by publishing great articles, such as product reviews, how-to/DIY articles, top strategies, checklists, saving tips, and more. Use the momentum of Cyber Monday to propel yourself into the holidays to snowball your success.

What Is Cyber Monday?

Close on the heels of Black Friday (the largest shopping day in the U.S.), Cyber Monday is considered the biggest online shopping day of the year and it lands on Monday, December 2nd this year. Cyber Monday's popularity increased so much in recent years that many businesses have decided to extend it into Cyber Week by offering deals, events, and promotions for at least 5 full business days.

8 Tips to Get Ready for Cyber Monday

  • Establish what deals you will have and set a specific goal. For example, if you know for every 100 views of one article that you sell an average of 10 items and your goal for Cyber Monday is to sell 100 items, then your goal is to have 1,000 targeted views.
  • Determine your message by differentiating yourself from the crowd. Consider your unique value proposition (what makes your offer honestly the best) and how you can present it in an engaging, personable way to your audience.
  • Spread the word by considering how you will inform your current and prospective audience, such as emails, blogs, tweets, social media updates, pins, etc.
  • Do not SPAM your audience. Find balance by ensuring you're providing quality, relevant, and valuable information that is welcome.
  • Be smart and specific about your word choice. For example, "great deals" or "holiday sale" may not have as much impact as "Cyber Monday Deals," "Cyber Monday Specials," or "Cyber Week Deals."
  • Use eye-catching, attractive titles to pull readers in and avoid gimmicky titles like "Don't Miss Your Chance!" or "You'll Wish You Didn't Miss This Opportunity!"
  • Check, double check, and triple check to ensure you have a great call-to-action that clearly compels your visitor to act.
  • Track your data using your goals as a guide. Knowing article views, bounce rates, social media engagement stats, peak traffic times, audience demographics, and more can help you measure your success and tweak your strategy for next year.

[EzineArticles] Embrace the Truth: Your Brand Doesn't Really Matter to Readers

Embrace the Truth: Your Brand Doesn't Really Matter to Readers EzineArticles.com Logo

You Can Rise Above the Noise

It's a hard truth: brands are ceasing to matter because they aren't as important as the truth. Good and bad, readers, clients, and consumers really want that truth broken to them by someone they can connect with: A fellow human.

Just Your Average Brand

Brands are everywhere. They're not only on store shelves; they're on the billboards of our commute, on our phones, on our coffee mugs, on our shoes, on our social media page, and much more. After a while, all of these brands begin to blur into the same promises and same old delivery. Which makes you stop to wonder: Do we actually see these brands and do we truly hear them? Yes and no. The majority of the visual and auditory noise of brand output is average because brands often fail to deliver two things: something different and a human-to-human connection.

Rise Above the Noise

Start by putting people first (including yourself) and giving people the truth in a remarkable way. Think of it like this: Brand loyalty is easily being exchanged with people-to-people loyalty. Our friends and family (with whom we're predisposed to be loyal) recommend or dissuade us from trying a new product or service. We look to social sites (like YouTube, Pinterest, and Reddit) for more reviews and DIY directions. When we want the word on the street about a particular topic or a discussion we're interested in, we look to the personal and professional blogs and articles written by the most successful people in that particular niche. Today, we are won over by people and are loyal to people, not necessarily brands.

Loyalty is also driven by how much you're willing and able to innovate by striking new ground, to connect with your audience, consistently meet their needs, and tell others why your message matters. This is a challenge because the minute your audience can get the same thing from another author or source (more cheaply and easily), they'll leave. So you have to stay ahead of your niche, but it's well worth it.

For example: Typical articles written by Author A will be easily be replaced by another typical article written by Author B - both of which can be easily forgotten by your audience. In walks Author C, who writes an innovative, truthful article that connects with readers. This pushes Author A and B into irrelevant oblivion. Eventually, Author A and B will regurgitate what Author C had said, but it's no problem because Author C is already creating the next big thing.

How to Connect and Innovate

  • Average Be Gone

First, stop contributing to the average noise and create things that are remarkable. You may find writing content about topics that others in your niche are covering to be comfortable and safe, but there's just one problem: if it's safe, then it's probably average too. From a business and marketing standpoint, average is catastrophic. Average simply won't cut it because (to reiterate here) there's so much of it saturating every niche and you need to rise above the noise.

Drop the mindset that you need to drop your prices, offer all of your ebooks for free, or even meet the baseline needs channeled by everyone else in your niche. Repeat: No more average content. Be remarkable. It is not your job to merely serve information. If it was, you'd be a faceless encyclopedia. Your job is to connect with your audience and that connection will foster loyalty. Write something worth talking about and make it remarkable.

  • Take Initiative

Next, have a vision and take initiative. Don't wait for someone else to tell you what to do and what to write. Start by cultivating your "how did they do that" mindset and then create a vision of innovation. Stop accepting what currently is and start questioning. What is it? How was it done? Does it have to be this way? How can it be improved? Better yet, how can I (that's you) position a ground breaking change that will lead to better results? Cultivating this mindset will give your efforts sustainability beyond the first, second, or third triumph.

Scared? Unless of course someone's life and well-being is literally in your hands, be okay with failure. Are you going to fail? Maybe, but more importantly, you've opened yourself up to succeed. Simply remember: Failure isn't final and it's an opportunity. If you write an article that doesn't resonate with readers today, write another (better) one tomorrow. Shut down your fear to think long enough for a solution. Once you've got it, feel free to bug out if you still feel the need. Most times, the feeling of fear will pass if you continue moving forward, but the key is to take the initiative. It will never be given, you have to take it yourself.

  • Be a Person

Change your thinking to connect with people. You are not a brand. You are a person. You have likes. You have dislikes. You are mind-numbingly bored by things. You're passionate about things. So is your audience. Use these things to be the powerhouse that fires up your articles.

In addition, article writing and creating good content is not technical writing, nor is it conveying news passively. To really connect with readers, write something worth talking about, that has a valuable core message, and resonates with readers. To do this, be absolutely truthful through incorporating emotion (fear, joy, anger, love, etc.) as well as telling a story through your content like a personal anecdote.

Finally, be confident. Confidence in your message and clearly stating your UVP (Unique Value Proposition) will compel your audience to act and give them a hand in discussing it with others.

Ready? Let go of the concept that readers hold to brands. They hold to your remarkable ideas and extraordinary stories. Once you've taken the initiative to lead and are confident in the originality of your own message, all you'll have to do is spread the word.

[EzineArticles] 20 Embarrassing Authority Killers That Will Make Readers Flee En Masse

20 Embarrassing Authority Killers That Will Make Readers Flee En Masse EzineArticles.com Logo

Want to Kill Your Authority? Ignore This List

I once heard anything can kill you - such as thousands of paper cuts could potentially make you bleed out and anything taken out of moderation could have harmful effects. The same may be true for your authority - anything could potentially kill it, but that doesn't mean you should lock it up (see #5) or not take calculated risks (see #7). It's all about moderation and using common sense.

However, there are a number of embarrassing power killers that will deflate your efforts to build exposure and leverage your expertise. Save face by avoiding these 20 authority killers that will put off your reader's interest.

20 Authority Killers to Avoid

  1. Clichés: They're predictable, leaving your readers completely unfazed and they only add to the noise on the Internet.

  2. Ignorant: Gain first-hand experience and research to acquire knowledge rather than doling out vague or even misleading information.

  3. Boredom: If you're bored, your readers will be too. Allow your personality and passion to saturate your articles to be more engaging.

  4. Old news: Keep up with industry trends and current events not only in your niche, but what's relevant to your audience.

  5. Be a Silo: Allow others to influence your opinion and/or advances in technology and society to move you forward.

  6. Not Competitive: Be aware of what your competitors are covering and do more, better.

  7. Not Make Waves: You need to stand out from your competition. Taking risks can help you gain an edge.

  8. One-Hit-Wonder: Stop writing about the same information to avoid becoming a hackneyed author.

  9. Who's this for again? Always know your target audience, their needs, their quirks, what they do/don't do, and what they want.

  10. Promotion: Some promotion is good as long as it aims to inform. Don't be pushy. Present information that lets readers decide for themselves.

  11. Silence: Even if you're not churning a new article daily, make sure your social media, editorial, and users-driven signals are strong.

  12. Circumventing: Avoid writing like a poor politician; i.e., a vague answer or an answer that completely circumvents the question or topic.

  13. Lack of Transparency: Provide information about you and your company on your website and blog - this should be readily accessible to users.

  14. Formality: Over-the-top jargon and formalities are not necessary and will put off readers.

  15. Negativity: Allowing negative commentary to exist unaddressed as well as writing overtly negative content can be disastrous.

  16. Inauthentic: Be original and real. Inaccuracies and mimicking another brand will confuse readers.

  17. Unaccountable: You need to be 100% behind what you wrote and prepared to be accountable for every word.

  18. Complicated: Keep it simple. Readers suffer enough from information overload.

  19. Cut Corners: Never sacrifice quality to save time and effort.

  20. No Differentiation: Readers should readily know what unique value you offer over your competition.

What authority killers would you add to this list? Click here to let us know - we'd love to hear from you!

[EzineArticles] Keywords Have Evolved: Now Is Your Opportunity to Shine With the Long Tail

Keywords Have Evolved:
Now Is Your Opportunity
To Shine With the Long Tail
EzineArticles.com Logo

Quality Content Still Reigns

It's over! The preoccupation with understanding and using keywords is no longer a battle for new and experienced content creators and Expert Authors.

What's changed?

Article writing and content creation for online users has undergone a major shift from the early days of keyword discovery and later aggressive keyword regulation. Many of us have collectively breathed a sigh of relief as the emphasis is back on quality content over keyword-riddled junk because search engines have improved their ability to connect a user's conversational long-tail queries with quality and original content.

What does this mean for you?

You have an opportunity to shine.

Before we get into the "how to," let's take a quick step back in keyword history.

A (Tongue-in-Cheek) Brief History of Keyword Usage

Many content creators have wisely (and not so wisely) used keyword practices as a part of their content marketing strategy over the years. What began with good intentions to increase their ability to be searched by their target audiences soon became a hotbed of questionable black hat SEO tactics as content creators (knowingly and unknowingly) allowed themselves to be drawn in by poor "quick 'n easy" promises. Let's take a closer look:

  • Keywords Discovered: "Hey, these keywords are neat and helped me show up on page one. I think I will use more of them."
  • Keyword Clouds: "I'll place a widget 'cloud' of words on my page to help search engines understand what my page is all about. Look! I can even make the words spin and interact with users!"
  • Keyword Glut: "I NEED MORE KEYWORDS! I'll just stuff them here, there, everywhere and then I will rule the search - mwhahahahaha!"
  • Keywords Spun: "Quantity is so much better than quality! I'll write dozens of articles covering the same topic and alter the text ever so slightly. It's not exactly identical, but it targets the same keywords at least."
  • Keywords Regulated: "STOP! This is the keyword police. Your content is under arrest. You are allowed one keyword or keyword phrase for every one hundred words. Failure to comply will result in suspension and de-indexing."
  • Keywords Evolved.

How Users, Publishers, and Search Engines Were Affected

Internet users hated the early days of keyword glut and spinning.

Search became a game of keyword roulette because poor quality would often outrank quality content, but what else could they do? Not use the Internet was out of the question, so they either accepted it as the way things were or they experimented with different search engines and social media.

Publishers disliked it too.

Targeting keywords over providing a good user experience and informative content cheapened the quality and value of the publisher's platforms. As a result, publishers attempted to fend off spam by establishing keyword checkpoints that blocked poor quality content and rewarded good quality content. Unfortunately, this made it more difficult for Expert Authors to publish.

Search engines were in hot water.

Internet users "putting up" with poor quality content wasn't acceptable, nor was allowing derivative, spun content driven by popular keywords to game the system. Search engines strived to provide a great user experience and found a way by improving semantic search and rewarding quality content. Their innovation has led to the evolution of keywords.

Current Affairs and the Long Tail

While keywords continue to have their place, the landscape has changed. Through the use of smarter synonym tools as well as the fine-tuning of co-occurrence contextual recognition tools, search engines are now more in tune with the needs of users and are better at understanding the relationships between indexed content, keywords, and user search queries.

For Expert Authors like yourself, this means you have the opportunity for your existing and future quality content to do well. This is especially true if you have strong brand, link, social, and user signals as well as target long-tail user queries, which are ranking higher than ever before because they emulate the practices of natural, conversational speech used by your audience.

The long tail depicts the frequency with which a topic occurs and its demand. Let's take a closer look.

There are three main parts of the long-tail concept: the head, the middle, and the tail.

  • Head: At the top of the curve, the Head targets a large audience with a high content saturation, demand, and competition (e.g., "Weight Loss").
  • Middle: Connecting the head and the tail, the Middle moderately targets an audience with an average content saturation, demand, and competition (e.g., "Weight Loss for Women" and "Weight Loss for Women Over 40").
  • Tail: The Tail targets a highly focused audience with content that's in low supply, demand, and competition (e.g., "Weight Loss for Women Over 40: Top 7 Quick, Easy, and Painless Tips to Drop a Dress Size or More!)".

By targeting your audience and creating content along the long tail, you will increase the likelihood of your articles being seen by readers.

Don't Dump the Overall Concept of Keywords Entirely

Of course, you shouldn't throw out good keyword strategies such as integrating great keywords into your titles naturally and writing articles contextually relevant to search queries based on user demand. Find balance. Provide rich, informative content that focuses on the reader both on and off your website. Create strong social signals by engaging with your audience on social media (via discussions, sharing, etc.). And finally, implement good keyword strategies that help (not hinder) your success.

Go on! Take this opportunity to shine by brainstorming long-tail article titles, allow your experience to come forth, and let the keywords take a break. Refocus on writing creative, engaging, informative content that really connects with readers.

Bruce Kaler M.D. "... establish your voice and brand ..."

The marketing principle of giving away of something of value for free in order to sell something else, resonated with me. It is also a way to establish your voice and brand in a more structured professional manner than typical social media i.e. Facebook, Twitter, et al. They have their place and are useful to an author/writer. However, the growth of the internet creates a huge demand for quality content. I still think the key is to write "quality content". If it is well written, accessible, and of timely interest to people it will get plenty of attention. EzineArticles is a wonderful reservoir of good content on many topics.

[EzineArticles] Overwhelmed? Break BIG Goals Into Manageable Chunks

Overwhelmed? Break BIG Goals
Into Manageable Chunks
EzineArticles.com Logo

Become a Goal Achiever

"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off the goal." - Henry Ford

Are you feeling overwhelmed? Does it seem like there are constant obstacles in your path? Do you imagine some maniacal being is sabotaging you by thwarting your progress?

An Expert Author recently expressed this same frustration, stating it's easy to make goals, visualize yourself meeting them, but actually doing it during the daily grind is another story.

I'm going to share with you what I shared with her: Whether your goal is to write a 50,000 word novel for NaNoWriMo or publish 30 articles by the end of the month, you can set actionable steps to feasibly achieve your goals by chunking.

What Is Chunking?

Chunking is the process of dividing something into smaller chunks. You can chunk down to create actionable steps and chunk up to prioritize your efforts.

Think of it like you're looking at a forest:

  • Chunk Down: See the forest (goal) for the trees (details). Consider the elements and details that make the goal whole.
  • Chunk Up: See the forest (goal) as a whole. Avoid getting so wrapped up in the details that you lose sight of the big picture.

How Do You Do It?

Chunking down is best done with a map as a guide. Here's how to make your map:

  • Once you've established your goal, write it down.
  • Chunk down by writing all of the steps and elements you need to take to get there.
  • Draw arrows indicating the order of events between the steps.

For example, let's say I want to publish 30 articles by the end of the month. Here's what my map (in part) may look like:

Once you have a map detailing the chain of events needed to achieve your goal, move forward by planning a timetable.

When Do You Do It?

Once you've established a road map, chunk your time by creating a timetable. Of course, be realistic with the timetable, but be okay with a challenge. Push the limit!

For example, I know I take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to draft an article of 700-1,000 words. This estimate may be less with zero distractions, but I'm never 100% distraction free so I'm giving myself a little wiggle room. I usually will take an additional 30 minutes to revise, edit, proofread, and perform final edits. To submit and publish, I will allot at least 5 minutes to ensure all of the information in the Write & Edit submission form of my account is correct. I'll also take 10 minutes to prepare a few social media posts to be ready to promote the article once it's live. From start to finish, I clock 2 hours and 15 minutes for one article.

To write 30 articles (to meet my goal), I will need to allot 67 hours and 30 minutes for the duration of one month. Since I have various non-writing duties and priorities (as well as a few holidays this month), I need to chunk out my writing schedule to accommodate my writing goal accordingly.

First, I've estimated the duration of my daily writing sessions to determine how much time each day I will be dedicating to writing:

  • 1 article = 2 hours and 15 minutes
  • 2 articles = 4 hours and 30 minutes
  • 3 articles = 6 hours and 45 minutes

Next, I'll create a timetable to stay on the ball. I'll also share this with my team, family, and friends to secure their support.

Based on this timetable, I'll have written 30 articles by day 25 with planned catch-up days (in case my writing sessions are interrupted and I go over the time I allot myself) as well as breaks to refresh and celebrate holidays with my family.

The next step: Do it!

It's never too late to get on track with your goals. When you break goals into doable chunks, it's much easier and more motivating to achieve them. Set a goal, apply the chunking method, embrace it by taking action, and don't take your eyes off the goal!

What method do you use to achieve your goals? Click here to let us know - we'd love to hear from you!

[EzineArticles] Be Better, Faster: Make Writing a Daily Habit

Be Better, Faster:
Make Writing a Daily Habit
EzineArticles.com Logo

Get on the Right Track to Accomplish Your Writing Goals

Many authors hit the proverbial wall or performance plateau: Your attention wanes, distractions increase, you can't seem to break any new ground in your writing, and the finish line is further away ...

No matter what: Stay on track! Don't give up. You've got a goal to meet and we can help.

Ready? Let's do this!

5 Basic Steps to Get It Done

To increase your writing speed and fluency, practice regularly. Use these 5 steps to develop a writing routine.

  • Step One: Make Writing a Daily Habit

Think about your day. Your schedule may be impeccably organized and prioritized down to the minute. Or it might be so loose that you may have a few routines (brush teeth, shower, eat, etc.), but you allow whatever comes your way to spontaneously take over. Most people are somewhere in between. If your day is rigid, make sure your writing goal is high up on your priorities and adjust your schedule accordingly. If your day is loose, make writing your first priority before you do anything else to ensure it doesn't get lost on other impulses. Find balance by putting your derriere in your writing chair for at least 20 minutes every day to make writing a daily habit. Even if you cannot write X amount of words or an entire article, it's better than nothing.

  • Step Two: Find a Time and Stick to It

Pick a time that works for your creativity level and lifestyle. Many authors choose to write in the early hours of the morning or late into the night because they find the time is optimal for their creative output and they're distraction free while everyone else is asleep. Don't forget to rest! Adjust your sleep schedule accordingly to ensure you're alert while writing for optimal creativity and productivity.

  • Step Three: Pick the Setting

Routines are best established when they're simple. Once you've establish a time you can commit to, pick a location with the basic tools to get the job done and stick to it. Elaborate tools and writing in "romantic" settings won't bring success - you bring your own success. Making sure you have the right latte; the best voice operating software; a chair that has just the right amount of firmness and back support (but not too much or it's going to be too relaxing); the right fountain pen and paper so smooth, it's like writing on silk; etc. - you don't need these things. You need something (anything) to write with, to be relatively comfortable, and you. Keep it simple and stick to it.

  • Step Four: Let Your Intentions Be Known

In Friday's post, we mentioned: "Inform those you live with of the importance of your goal and how they can specifically help you (even if it's "don't bother me" during a particular period of time)." To expand on this further: Tell friends and family of your writing goals and your plans to achieve it. Set boundaries and include them in your efforts by sharing an idea, asking them questions, and more. You'd be surprised how much your friends and family will respect and support your writing goal if you involve them in some manner. To ensure they don't feel attention starved, plan one-on-one time with them.

  • Step Five: Be Accountable to Your Goals

If writing is really important to you, then ensure it's a priority and be mindful of that priority. Short of a life-threatening scenario, give yourself over to your writing goals no matter what. Don't let non-essentials and less important people or things draw you away from your goal. Be accountable if you miss your daily writing session by ensuring you make up for it and reward yourself when you achieve milestones.

Thousands of authors worldwide are challenging themselves throughout the month of November to reach their writing goals. It's never too late to start. Set your writing goal and get on the right track by preparing for obstacles and developing a routine using the above tips.

[EzineArticles] What Expert Authors Can Gain From National Novel Writing Month

What Expert Authors Can Gain From National Novel Writing Month EzineArticles.com Logo

Get So Motivated, You'll Find Yourself Writing Your Socks Off

They say Ernest Hemingway once said, "There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed."

If you're like me, you're probably thinking, "Whoa! I know content marketing and writing will help me build tons of exposure, but I didn't sign up for this!" Don't worry: Many successful and prolific writers (from all walks of life), have found various writing methods to stay motivated and actually succeed without having to open up a vein.

You can use their methods and enjoy writing, too! All you need is a little push.

Today's that day: November 1st marks National Author's Day (that's you - whether you're published or want to be published fiction writer or non-fiction writer). It's on this day that writers from around the world rejuvenate their writing efforts by assigning themselves an exacting challenge. Many non-fiction authors will challenge themselves to write and publish at least one article a day - without sacrificing quality. Fiction writers aspiring to publish a novel may choose to participate in a widely known National Novel Writing Month challenge known as NaNoWriMo. Many non-fiction authors can benefit from following NaNoWriMo guidelines to dominate their own writing goals this November.

What's NaNoWriMo?

From plumbers and nurses to amateur and professional authors, NaNoWriMo (NAtional NOvel WRIting MOnth) participants challenge themselves to write a 50,000 word novel starting on November 1 and finishing by the end of November. Thousands have used NaNoWriMo to celebrate their passion for writing and achieve their dream of publishing a novel. NaNoWriMo is largely on the honor system because when it comes down to it, it's your goal. Cheating won't help you get published. Cheating won't get you readers. In the end, quality always wins the race, no matter the word count or deadline.

Top 7 Tips to Get it Done

The forums and "pep talks" (advice from fellow writers) available on NaNoWriMo help keep participants motivated. Here's some of the most invaluable pieces of advice that you can start applying to your own writing goals today:

  • Use resources, like writing guides and prompts, to help brainstorm ideas and make your writing process more efficient.
  • Train yourself to eliminate and ignore distractions.
  • Get a challenge partner for friendly competition and support for when you meet each milestone.
  • Inform those you live with the importance of your goal and how they can specifically help you (even if it's "don't bother me" during a particular period of time).
  • Don't be a perfectionist while you're writing - write now, revise next, and edit later.
  • Find time to write and stick to it by making writing a part of your routine.
  • Avoid putting writing off by waking up earlier if you're typically drained at the end of the day to write or taking an extended lunch if your prime creative time is midday.

Create Your Own Writing Challenge

Ready? Set your intention! Here are some questions to help you establish your goal for November:

  • What's your writing goal for this month?
  • What milestones must you meet to achieve the goal?
  • How will you prioritize tasks to ensure your writing goal doesn't fall to the wayside?
  • What tools can you use to effectively reach your goal?

Marc De Bruin "I am really grateful that sites like Ezinearticles exist ..."

I have really loved my journey with EzineArticles so far. It's a great tool to use. I often consider the amount of work that must go into this site. If I had to do all that myself, I'd go mad! I am really grateful that sites like Ezinearticles exist, as they make life for not-too-techie authors like me so much easier! And in a strange way, EzineArticles.com is somewhat of an accountability partner for me as well. If I don't post anything for a while, I start feeling guilty! Which makes me write, get noticed; which then motivates me to write more, etc.!
