[EzineArticles] 5 Ways Reading Can Encourage Better Writing Techniques

5 Ways Reading Can Encourage Better Writing Techniques EzineArticles.com Logo
Read Often. Write Often. Repeat.

"If you don't have time to read, you don't have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that." - Stephen King

The two obvious ways to become a better writer are: read and write often. However, with today's increasing influence on technology and all of the world's information at our fingertips through the power of the Internet, is basic reading losing its appeal?

We don't think so; we think lots of reading is crucial for writing success! If you're looking for a spark of inspiration to help you keep up with your reading, these 5 ways will help keep you on your toes.

1. Expand Your Sources: Most people establish a routine when it comes to their reading material. Perhaps they prefer a certain author, follow an enjoyable blog, or check the same news site on a daily basis. It's great to establish a reading habit; however, if you aren't open branching out in your reading, it's possible you won't branch out and incorporate multiple perspectives in your own writing. Expand your reading online and offline to help you gain an edge on how topics are covered in multiple places.

2. Always Carry a Book: Finding extra time in our busy schedules can seem unattainable. Think hard on how the times of day you have free time. It's likely you have down time where you reach for your smartphone or honker down in front of the TV. If you have a book on hand, you will be more inclined to read. Spend a few minutes reading while dinner is cooking; read on your lunch break; read in the bathroom! The more you read, the more you will become familiar with proper linguistics.

3. Vocabulary Boost: When you were in school, did your teacher ask you to look up definitions of new words? Why not do it as an adult?! As you're reading content from various mediums, jot down unfamiliar words. Learn the definitions and try to incorporate them in your own writing when fitting. You will learn something new in the process, and slowly build up your vocabulary. Don't be afraid of new words; they could end up becoming your favorite! If you need a good starting point, refer to our past blog 100 Words Every Expert Author Should Know.

4. Learn from the "Classics": Even if you're just bursting on the scene as an author, getting back to the basics is highly encouraged. Writing styles have certainly changed over the years, but it's important to look back on what was deemed a "classic" and see what all of the fuss was about. You may be patiently waiting for your favorite author to publish another fascinating piece, but in the meantime, take a peek at some older novels or highly acclaimed articles as well.

5. Read Your Own Content: Do you ever look over your writing a 2nd time and realize the sentence structure sounds repetitive and bland? Or worse, like a cyborg? Reading out loud can help you drastically improve your grammar and your content will make more sense in print. Tweak your wording and read it out loud again, but not too loud so you disturb your colleagues!

The bottom line is: persistent reading needs to be in your game plan. Reading offers countless ways to boost your writing skills and expand your knowledge-base. When you need a break from writing, pick up something to read!

What are your best tips to find new reading material and make time to read? Share your comments, and feel free to provide your own advice on how to keep reading enjoyable!

[EzineArticles] EzineArticles.com Links Are Now 100 Percent NOFOLLOW

EzineArticles.com Links Are Now 100 Percent NOFOLLOW EzineArticles.com Logo
Effective today, we've updated EzineArticles.com to be 100% NOFOLLOW. Previously, we were NOFOLLOW on everything except for the Resource Box, below the Article Body.

Keeping Our Authors' Best Interests in Mind

I sometimes feel we should have made this decision years ago, but our members made it loud and clear to us that they valued the links in the Resource Box that didn't include the NOFOLLOW attribute, even though we've felt the importance of this attribute has been muted due to the several hundred signals that search engines now use to determine rank and search results.

Today is a turning point where we believe there is more UPSIDE to moving 100% of EzineArticles.com to NOFOLLOW than a downside loss in confidence by members who may believe otherwise.

We don't guess; we test. :-)

The goal here at EzineArticles.com has always been to help our Members to publish high quality articles that will increase traffic back to your website, help you build credibility and influence within your industry of expertise, and also to gain media exposure. Every single year, we have raised the bar and set higher quality standards to ensure we're delivering the best end-user experience.

Quick Overview

In the past, we allowed Members to place up to 1-2 links in their Resource Box and these did not include the NOFOLLOW attribute. This meant they instructed the search engines to infer that these links should bleed value from our site, brand and reputation.

Keep in mind that search engines now use several hundred signals to deliver their results and the NOFOLLOW attribute was only one of several hundred signals. Perhaps it had a lot of importance in the first year of its introduction, but that importance is no longer the same today in 2014.

As the criteria for page indexing and search engine ranking has changed over time, we updated our standards on what types of links were accepted. For example, on several occasions we updated our requirements in terms of overall link quality. On another occasion, we updated our criteria to ensure the link content was relevant to the topic of the article. All of this was done in order to ensure that links in the Resource Box that didn't have a NOFOLLOW attribute adhered to the highest standards of relevance and value for end users.

Our Future with NOFOLLOW Links

Typically, sites that use NOFOLLOW links tend to be considered higher quality websites that in turn see higher overall traffic.

Also, in the past, search engines relied more heavily on links when determining how to index pages in search engine results. New data implies that search engines are relying less on the content's links and more on other quality content aspects.

In order to evaluate how we can get our members the most exposure and traffic, we updated all links to NOFOLLOW as a test to see how articles and overall site performance is affected.

Please be assured, we gave this decision a great deal of contemplation that was backed with plenty of market research and determined it was necessary for us to test with NOFOLLOW links throughout.

Dispelling Your Concerns

Essentially, there are many pieces of the puzzle that determine how a page is indexed by search engines. We can say with confidence that links without the NOFOLLOW attribute don't carry as much weight as they did in the past. There are many content marketers who have found success in posting to NOFOLLOW pages as the website itself holds a higher ranking.

In the grand scheme of things, transparency and quality content will always rise to the top. If you post an excellent article sharing new information that uses natural keywords and includes a high quality relevant link, your readers will be more likely to engage. These types of organic, natural efforts will result in a bottom-line that truly matters.

In addition, when your articles are shared by another person, it's possible to gain links that may not include the NOFOLLOW attribute on other more highly-niche resource websites, which results in natural backlinking, one of the keys to search engine optimization.

Moving Forward

There is no way to know if something works unless you test!

If we see better results for our Members, we will keep the links NOFOLLOW from here forward. If we see a negative change for a substantial amount of individual articles and our website as a whole, we will re-evaluate this decision.

This was a very difficult decision for several years, but in today's current SEO climate, this was a much easier decision and we think it's in our mutual best interests.

Because our goal is to deliver you the most traffic possible in exchange for your high quality unique article submissions, we believe today's change has very little downside and most likely only an upside. Time will tell and we will monitor this closely. We don't guess; We test.

[EzineArticles] Have a Case of Weak Wording? Revive Your Parts of Speech!

Have a Case of Weak Wording? Revive Your Parts of Speech! EzineArticles.com Logo
The Informal Writing Bug

In a world where we're accustomed to 140-character Tweets, simple text messages, spontaneous emails, and casual blog posts, we're familiar with informal grammar. It's not uncommon to shorten a message by omitting certain parts of speech. This style of writing certainly has its place, but it doesn't belong in your content writing!

In order to establish your credibility as an Expert Author, it's important to maintain proper grammar and sentence structure. In other words, avoid using "weak wording" in your writing.

What is Weak Wording?

Weak wording is written like this:

"Going to store to get dinner. Will be back in 15 minutes. Please have table set."

In this example, the subjects and articles are omitted from the sentence. The proper version reads:

"I'm going to the store to get dinner. I'll be back in 15 minutes. Please have the table set."

Let's cover what's missing.

The Subject

When it comes to parts of speech, a subject is the person, place, thing that is performing the action or being described. In this case it is "I'm" and I'll."

The Article

An article is a short word that is added before a noun to signify the type of reference being made to the noun that follows. In English, these are:

- the
- a/an

The word 'the' is the definite article. It refers to a SPECIFIC thing.

Example: Set the table. (We are referring to a specific table).

The word 'a' is the indefinite article. It refers to an UNSPECIFIC thing.

Example: Set a table. (We are not referring to a specific table).

The Source of the Bug

When our Editors see articles that are missing proper subjects and articles, we realize it can happen for a variety of reasons. Some of those include:

  • SEO Grammar Plague: Other writers have caught the plague of problematic SEO writing. Theses writers realize many people enter choppy, SEO-friendly keyphrases into search engines and then try to exploit those weaknesses. However, anytime a keyphrase is used, it needs to make sense in the context of the content, regardless of SEO purposes. You can refer to section 1a of our Editorial Guidelines (http://ezinearticles.com/editorial-guidelines/guideline/1a) for further information.
  • Immunity! Finally, some of us do it simply because we're used to typing in a shorthand form. In this case, we challenge you to be true to yourself and uphold your best writing style, no matter what you are writing! Get in the habit of reading your articles out loud prior to submission. This will help you catch any parts of speech that you inherently omitted.

Doctor's Advice:

When you're writing an article to be shared with others, be sure to include all necessary subjects and articles in your sentences. While it might save time and it's likely readers will be able to figure out your intent, your expertise as a writer will be lost.

There's a time and a place for all styles of writing. When it comes to your content, establish your credibility by writing with correct technique. In turn, you will see less article rejections for problematic grammar.

It isn't easy to become a strong writer; don't throw your skills out the window and succumb to the weak wording that surrounds our everyday lives. Improve your writing health today!

[EzineArticles] How to Be a Superhero Expert Author

How to Be a Superhero Expert Author EzineArticles.com Logo
Superheroes to the Rescue!

Lately, superheroes are everywhere. They fill the pages of classic comic books, they grace the screens of big budget movies, and they can even be found in the world of article writing!

Yes, you heard it correct. There are outstanding article-writing superheroes who rise to the top with their quality content and ethical marketing practices. We are thankful for their existence because there are also devious article-writing villains who lurk in the corners of the Internet waiting to lure others into their scheming ways.

Are you playing the role of a superhero by giving your readers valuable, original content? Or have you fallen victim to the villains?

Let's meet the cast to learn more about the superheroes and villains of article writing.

Spoiler Alert!

The superheroes ALWAYS win.

The VILLAINS

1. The Pushy Promoter – The Pushy Promoter loves to push his products in the face of his readers. Building trust and creating value means nothing to this aggressive villain! His tactic of forcing his opinion does NOTHING for his popularity. Readers run away at the sight of his hard-selling ways.

2. Master of Deception – Tactics of this deceptive villain include: robotic-sounding social media updates, using article spinners to generate content, and implying false scarcity like "Buy Now! Limited Time Offer!" in his Resource Boxes. His tactics are a waste of time and simply frustrate readers when they discover the truth. The content sounds artificial, causes confusion, and doesn't lure any prospects. The Master of Deception never wins.

3. The Rambling Rewriter – The Rambling Rewriter has a way of regurgitating old information and presenting it as brand new. He doesn't concentrate on writing unique content, which simply bores his audience. If this villain tries to persuade you to repurpose your old articles without adding any additional value, just say NO WAY.

4. Madam Keyword Abuser – Keyword stuffing is a practice that is aggressively shut down by search engines, but that doesn't stop this villain! She continually attempts to fool search engines into sending traffic her way by stuffing unrelated keywords and using confusing, unnatural keyword variations throughout her content. Use the Google Keyword Planner to view keyword recommendations and build ranking to avoid temptation from Madam Keyword Abuser.

5. The Fraudulent Friend – This disliked villain tries to inflate his popularity by purchasing social media followers, page likes, and content views. He is constantly breaking trust with his readers when they find out his fans are fake. Don't follow the sly ways of the Fraudulent Friend. Keep your hands clean by marketing yourself professionally and you'll be respected for your genuine efforts.

Luckily, we have a strong team of superheroes that are ready to battle evil content marketing villains until only quality content prevails!

The SUPERHEROES

1. Doctor Wordsmith – Informative content is the epitome of quality writing; and submitting exciting and unique articles is what Doctor Wordsmith does to rise above derivative or spammy content. Be a true contender in your niche by delivering new value when others are just regurgitating old information. If your content lacks originality or personality, it won't matter how much you write because your audience will be long gone. Set a good example by offering 100% original, informative content every single time.

2. The Talented Repurposer – The Talented Repurposer is an intelligent writer who publishes their articles over multiple platforms. Your content can reach a wider audience when packaged in article sets, eBooks, or visually stunning infographics. Create videos that touch on the main points of your articles and submit them to your social media pages. Turn quotes from your content into pins on Pinterest; or create Internet memes from your article topics to add humor. You can also build PowerPoint presentations from your articles and upload them to SlideShare with a keyword-rich headline. These are traffic magnets to attract readers!

3. Captain Authorship – Captain Authorship knows that one great way to brand yourself as an expert author is to link your content with Google Authorship. It's just one more way to link your quality content to your online persona, which helps to build trust. Follow Captain Authorship's lead and look into Google Authorship today!

4. The Traffic Agent – Measuring data is a top priority for authors who are focused on success. Be a Traffic Agent by understanding where your articles are making the most impact, then syndicate them in areas of good traffic. You can use integrated CRM and web analytics systems to view your prospects' activities, figure out what's driving them, and automate reports to track your success. Compare one or more articles against each other to gather data on where you can maximize future content.

5. The Social Connector – A social butterfly since birth, the Social Connector continually searches out new, promising social media avenues that cater to her fans. Social media continues to evolve with an increasing demand for interesting and newsworthy content. The challenge is to rise above the pests and deliver beautiful content to all. Be hero with your positive ways, put yourself out there, and expand your audience!

6. Evergreen Man – Relevant content helps build authority and improve your ranking in search engines. From the latest trends in your niche to new product reviews, write articles that are valuable to your readers. Article writing won't work if your content is stale. Keep it fresh, but also timeless. The Evergreen Man has a responsibility to write content that will stand the test of time. Instead of discussing specific events, discuss the greater issue surrounding the event. These articles will be relevant for years to come!

7. The Video Pioneer – Finally, the Video Pioneer knows that videos have a strong influence. He creates videos to accompany his articles in order to showcase his expertise in another medium. With the use of video, your articles can be shared through social media sites like YouTube, newsletters, and podcasts. YouTube has a Video Annotations feature to add commentary or links in your videos, which is a great way to link to your library of articles! Try responding to customer questions with a quick video on your website. Imagine their reaction when they see their answer spoken to them, rather than in writing!

While it would be wonderful if the world was full of superheroes, we know that villains exist, and it's no different in the world of content marketing. Readers want to trust what they read, and the information you provide should always prove you are one of the good guys.

If you need help battling villain tendencies, don't fear! That's why we're here. We'd love to help you develop the strong writing habits needed for success in article writing. [EzineArticles] 2014 EzineArticles Summer Update!

2014 EzineArticles Summer Update! EzineArticles.com Logo
The Beaches May Be Calling, But We've Been Busy, Busy, Busy

Hello dear expert authors! We sure have missed you these past few months. You may have been wondering where we've been, but trust us when we say we've been VERY busy making EzineArticles.com an even greater place for you and our hundreds of thousands of unique members!

So what exactly have we been up to?

The thing that we're most excited about is our transition over to a 100% multi-screen website design. You may have also heard this called a "responsive" website design. What does this mean? It means that no matter what device you're on, EzineArticles.com will scale beautifully and be easy to read and navigate. Whether you're on a smartphone, a tablet, a desktop computer with a 27" monitor, a laptop, even the digital screen on your fridge (oh, you don't have one of those yet?) it'll look great.

Why is this important?

Well it's very important because more and more people are using devices other than their PCs to access websites. According to CNN, 55% of the internet usage in the United States in January of this year came from mobile devices. This trend is moving in a similar direction across the globe.

Something we want all of our expert authors to consider, if you haven't already, is how you plan on making your own websites responsive. It's a great benefit to your readers to be able to provide them an easy-to-read article on a responsive site like EzineArticles, but if you link them to a non-responsive site afterwards, it will only do your brand a disservice. We don't know when, there will come a time when there will be a disincentive to us to display your links if they're not responsive. We'll let you know if and when this happens, but we wanted to get you thinking about a plan of action before then.

When planning out your website's redesign, be careful who you turn to for help. Invest in a good multi-screen design by a company you trust (that is, if you are unable to do the web design yourself). There are some companies out there who will stick your content in a pre-formulated template, and riddle your site with annoying, ill-placed, and completely unrelated ads that only benefit their company. Be wary of this.

Another change that we've made recently is we no longer allow duplicate article titles. In the past, we allowed you to create and use titles that already existed on EzineArticles. We felt it was best to make this change because search engines don't like duplicate titles, and we want to make sure we build trust with all major search engines. The added benefit for you is now, when someone searches for your article by title, they will only get one result (yours!). This makes it a lot easier for people to find your content.

Aside from these major changes, we have a lot of projects we're really excited about that you can look forward to in the coming weeks and months. Article reviews will be steadily increasing in speed. We have even more easy-to-use article templates on deck to help you craft great content for your readers. We're writing lots of exciting new blog posts and creating dynamic infographics that will help you be the best expert author you can be. And we're even working on some top of the line new services for our Premium members. Be sure to stay tuned!

To close this post, I wanted to mention that this year we will celebrate the 15 year anniversary of EzineArticles.com. We're so humbled and honored to say that there are many talented expert authors that have been with us since way back then. We're excited about the future, and building even stronger relationships with all of our expert authors. We do what we do because we love giving you a platform to share your unique perspectives on the things you are passionate about.

Here's to many more successful years!

Do you have a question or comment for us? We'd love to hear it!

[EzineArticles] Getting Read: Essentials to Making Your Article Worth It

Getting Read: Essentials to Making Your Article Worth It EzineArticles.com Logo

Most People Mess This Up - Do You?

Whatever you want to get out of article writing and content marketing, there's one thing you're probably getting wrong:

You're focusing on the result, whether it's traffic, profit, or exposure in general.

When you focus on the result, no connection is made between you and the reader. You're essentially just another article in a vast sea of informative articles on the Internet.

Discover where your focus should be, what you can learn from a coffee shop, and how you can create loyal readers.

I'll Buy Why You Do It

We recently discussed how you must give before you take and the resultant rewards, such as established trust and the ability to meet the needs of your readers with solution-driven, fear-alleviating content.

There was one element missing from that post ...

Making your article truly worth writing and reading.

If it seems to you like writing informative articles that merely meet your readers' needs isn't enough, you're right. It will get you some views and your readers will be thankful for the information you provide, but it simply won't position you as a leader in your niche.

To be a leader, you need to inspire action and behavior in your readers that's tied to you and your platform. However, you can't focus on the result you want. You have to focus on why they should care.

I recently listened to Simon Sinek's still highly relevant 2009 TED talk on How Great Leaders Inspire Action and was struck by this easily forgotten statement:

"People don't buy what you do; they buy why you do it. The goal is not to do business with everybody who needs what you have. The goal is to do business with people who believe what you believe."

Whether you get wrapped up in the details - writing keyword-driven titles, following market trends, launching, positioning your brand, and increasing visibility, the why you do it gets lost. Once you lose the why, you lose focus on the people you are trying to serve. The status quo for failing marketing methods tends to be the following (in order).

  1. What you do.
  2. How you do it.
  3. Why you do it.

Even if you are the most qualified expert in your niche, this is the exact formula for abysmal article failure - it's outdated and no one can identify with it. It will exhaust all of the resources you dedicate to article writing and it will make you doubt whether content marketing is a viable option for your niche.

Sinek continues on to say all those who have succeeded, such as brands like Apple and even great leaders like Martin Luther King, have done so because they flipped this order. He refers to this concept as the "Golden Circle":

  1. Why you do it.

What's your purpose, cause, or belief, and more importantly, why should anyone care?

  2. How you do it.

What's your UVP or what separates you from others in order to accomplish your why?

  3. What you do.

What do you literally do, such as your niche or your expertise?

By turning this process around and the emphasis on the reader or user, you completely change your connection with your audience. You're no longer just another author writing another article. By establishing why first, you're someone your readers can identify with - now your readers can see themselves through you.

And that, my friends, is the secret to making your article worth writing and reading.

Don't pursue the result - money or traffic. Pursue your belief in why you are doing it. The readers who share your purpose, cause, or belief will follow you.

When I Realized My Favorite Coffee Shop Follows the Golden Circle Formula

After listening to Sinek's talk, I took a coffee break to meet with one of our editors at a local shop just down the street from HQ. As I grabbed my coffee and sat down in a great blue chair near the street-view window, it dawned on me that this coffee shop I visited so frequently follows Sinek's Golden Circle formula to a t:

  1. The Coffee Shop's Why

When you initially walk in to the coffee shop, you walk past other patrons sitting at tables and chairs enjoying a coffee and latte amongst colorful local art work, the smell of roasted coffee, the fresh light coming from the windows, and the old-building preservation that promotes a sense of community and self. This is the why - what makes coming here worth it. Anything can be complicated, but if you pause for a few moments to refresh, renew, and simply be in the community you are a part of, you can see the world much more clearly and appreciate the simple things. This is what this coffee shop stands for and why you can see me sitting here.

  2. The Coffee Shop's How

It's easy for anyone: grab a latte, coffee, tea - whatever your beverage of choice - have a seat, take a sip, and relax, read the book you brought, or have a discussion - this is your moment to just be you without pretense.

  3. The Coffee Shop's What

Quite simply, they're a local coffee roaster who by supporting their business, you support other local organizations they contribute to in order to appreciate and foster community.

"Want to buy a cup of coffee?"

While I love the coffee at this particular shop, I could just as easily go to the national coffee chain that's closer to HQ. Or I could save an extra $2.50 per cup by brewing my own coffee and be satisfied with it if that was my reason for going: the coffee. But that's not what keeps me coming back to this little shop. Like the others who keep coming back and telling everyone about it, the patrons of this particular coffee shop can easily see themselves sitting here. They can see themselves supporting community efforts. They can see themselves being the type of person who appreciates sitting in the moment. They can see themselves, period. And that fosters loyalty.

It's Your Turn to Embrace the Why

Sure, writing a great title will get your reader in the door and giving solution-driven content will help you build credibility, exposure, and more, but if you want your article to be truly worth it, then use the Golden Circle Formula:

  1. Establish the why of your topic in the introduction.
  2. Tell them how they can achieve it in the article body.
  3. Show them what in your conclusion.

Bear in mind, your articles should be non-self-serving; i.e., the "how" and what should not "take" by promoting you or a product or service that you are affiliated with. You and your blog or business can be the "what" in the Resource Box, but ensure that your efforts don't tease the reader by failing to deliver your why's promise in the article body.

I'll leave you with one last quote from Sinek that I strongly believe you should embrace:

"We follow those who lead not for them, but for ourselves."

Avoid getting trapped in an unrewarding cycle that's created by focusing on the results. Share your purpose, cause, or belief. Allow others see themselves through you.

Can you cite any other examples of authors or brands who lead by "why"? Do you have a question or comment? Click here to let us know - we'd love to hear from you!

[EzineArticles] Give vs. Take: "What Have Readers Done for ME Lately?"

Give vs. Take: "What Have Readers Done for ME Lately?" EzineArticles.com Logo

Are You Asking the Right Question?

Content creation - no matter the type - can often feel like a one-sided relationship. You seem to give and give to your audience, but no one's taking.

Before you nod in agreement, ask yourself one question:

Is what you're giving worth taking?

You know what you're giving is worth it when your audience is engaging and you're networking with the right people.

You may find all of your writing efforts have been worth it when you look back at your year and see the changes in your traffic and exposure. But more importantly, you know it was worth it when you can look at the connections you've made and the feedback on how your articles, big or small, have positively impacted the lives of your readers.

But wait! Before anything else, ask yourself, "What have YOU done for your readers lately?"

What Your Readers Need and Why

"Man needs, for his happiness, not only the enjoyment of this or that, but hope and enterprise and change." - Bertrand Russell

Help your readers meet their needs and you'll help yourself. While every niche has a variety of insights on what readers need, we can use Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to identify the basics that motivate our actions. Here's a quick refresher to help you recall or familiarize yourself with all 5:

  1. Physiological: Basic physical requirements needed for biological survival, such as food and water.
  2. Safety: Personal, health, well-being, financial, provisions, and protection needs.
  3. Love/Belonging: Sense of acceptance and belonging; to love and be loved.
  4. Esteem: Self-respect, confidence, and being respected; personal freedom.
  5. Self-Actualization: Being aware of personal potential; achieve personal growth to become the most that one can be.

Now, let's talk about that elephant in everyone's rooms that often triggers that flight or fight reflex that may inhibit these needs: fear.

Family and business consultant and psychologist Dan Baker classifies fear into two categories:

  • Fear of not having enough.
  • Fear of not being enough.

Not having enough food. Not being able to provide for one's family. Not being loved. Not having enough confidence. Not reaching that personal potential. These are examples of basic fears that are on the minds of your readers.

How You Can Give

"Behold I do not give lectures or a little charity, when I give I give myself." - Walt Whitman

Help your readers by creating content that empowers them to overcome their fears, helps them to realize their true needs, and ultimately achieve what they want most. Incorporate Baker's 12 mindfulness tools* that triumph over fear into your theme:

  • Appreciation
  • Optimism
  • Courage
  • Independence
  • Proactivity
  • Security
  • Good Health
  • Spirituality
  • Altruism
  • Perspective
  • Humor
  • Purpose

Can you recall a moment in time when you used any of the above tools to overcome a common fear in your niche and achieve a basic need? That's exactly what you can give to your readers. And in doing so, you'll help them overcome their fears in conjunction, meet their basic needs, and create immeasurable value that's well worth the effort.

The Importance of Giving Over Taking

"The most successful relationships I have built are with people I do more for than they do for me. I give, give, give, give, give, then ask." - Paul C. Brunson

Article writing is about giving. You can give and then take, but what happens if you take before giving?

It's a trap many new Expert Authors fall into: "Taking is better than giving." You might say, "That's not me!" The truth is we see it all of the time in people who have good intentions, but fail to see their content as self-serving. For example, an expert gets frustrated and wants to move things along and ends up asking too much of their audience by pushing their take (promoting themselves) in the body of their article. This results in self-serving content that's appears inauthentic and loses any value it may have provided the reader.

If you fail to give value, you and your brand will not grow. If you do give value, you will open yourself up to opportunities you otherwise would never be able to predict.

Hence our formula:

  1. You GIVE quality, original, and informative content that targets readers' needs in the article body. Be sincere in your tone and style as well as share real stories and authentic examples.

  2. You TAKE by providing just enough information in the Resource Box to whet your readers' appetite so they will be inclined to visit your website. By keeping your promotional content within the Resource Box, you increase your visibility and chances of being republished by other publishers who select articles from our directory.
This formula builds trust between you and the reader. When you skip the "give" and head straight into the "take," trust plummets. And for added measure, we recommend "taking" or your promotional content in your Resource Box to be limited to 10%-15% of the total article body. For example, if your article body's give is 1,000 words, then your Resource Box's take should only be 100-150 words.

How Giving Will Inherently Help You

"Love only grows by sharing. You can only have more for yourself by giving it away to others." - Brian Tracy

Adopt the "giving" mentality by asking yourself, "How can I help?" Don't expect total reciprocity. You will not always get 100% back from what you give - it could be more, but it could be less.

Receiving should not be your target, but inherently, we all seek cooperation, equality, and respect through the return of favors. Think of it as "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine" or quid pro quo. In article writing, you scratch your readers' backs before you ask them to scratch yours.

The idea of giving away anything for free, even in the form of informative articles, tends to give some newbies chills because it's simply harder to measure than traditional advertising and harder to see a direct correlation. You know the details on your end, but how readers interact with your articles may yield a variety of benefits that may not be easy to see the cause and effect.

It's different for everyone, but trust in the process. It has worked for thousands of authors. If you give or scratch the backs of your readers with informative and relevant content, you will inherently gain trust, exposure, credibility, authority, and a supporting network of engaged individuals over time.

Final Key Points to Remember

Giving has been proven to be good for your health because it increases a sense of well-being and triggers altruistic appreciation, which has been found to decrease stress and increase happiness. It's also good for your business because it leverages your professional brand into your market niche as a trustworthy and reliable resource that your readers can count on. Once earned, that trust has long-lasting positive effects that will make all of your efforts well worth it and opens your network further than you would have previously imagined.
